Sony Presents the World’s First OLED Television
4 Comments »Posted in GizmosJan 10, 2008
Televisions have revolutionized the way the world works; it’s picture quality has evolved from black and white to colour, then finally to the plasmas and LCD’s we see today. From huge and boxy to slimmer than three credit cards – wait, three credit cards? That’s right. New Organic Light-Emitting Diode televisions make it possible.

The Sony XEL-1, widely known for it’s thinness, is the first of a new breed of televisions bringing much change to the world. LED’s bring much nicer pictures (a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio) and it’s energy-efficiency. The new model, called the XEL-1, promises a brighter (pun intended) as well as a greener future. I’ve also just learned that Samsung plans to show a prototype of its own OLED TV at CES2008, taking place as we speak. However, since the technology is so new, the screens aren’t particularly big – Samsung’s only got a 31 centimetre screen, and Sony’s a bit ahead with 50 centimetres. The TV’s don’t come cheap either – near the grand to two-grand mark for such relatively small sizes.
Hopefully the technology catches on, and pretty soon demand will rise and prices will fall as a result. OLED TV’s really bring nothing but improvement to the world, as far as I can see. They’re environmentally-friendly and they give beautiful pictures, what more can you ask for in a television (besides bigger screens, which should come in the near future).
Now we’re talking sci-fi stuff. Next we’ll see consoles like those on ST:TNG. I’m still waiting for my ray gun and flying car though.
Wow! i am impressed with the loo of this OLED TV’s look. it has nice look and nice features
