Yes, I've tried all kinds of variations with brightness and contrast. Looks like I'll have to call Dell. I bought the monitor through Dell Outlet and it came with their advanced exchange program, so hopefully they'll be able to replace it quickly if this is a problem. Thanks!

Jimy: I really don't think that this is usual; have you tried adjusting contrast and other lighting options?

Herbert, thanks for the informative post. I'm a bit late to the party, but just got my S2209W. I have it hooked up so that I have dual monitors with my Dell XPS M1530. The S2209W seems substantially darker than the laptop screen to these novice eyes. For example, if I have a browser open and I have it dragged midway between my laptop and the monitor, I notice a substantial drop in brightness from the laptop to the monitor. I have bumped the brightness setting to 100, but still no luck.

Do you know if this is something I should expect from most other LCDs as well or is this a known issue with the S2209W?)

Thanks again!

Laura: Are you sure it's not an issue with the connection? I'd expect the DVD to play pretty well on this screen.

I just got this monitor as a dual display with my laptop and am having some issues.

i am not super computer savvy, but somewhat.

the main issue i am having is that when i have the monitor set to 1920x1080, DVDs play very choppy or jerky. they play fine if the monitor is set to mirror my laptop at 1280x720, but i hate how the image looks.

what is the solution?!

Chrone, unfortunately I don't have my Dell S2209W with me right now. Best of luck with the tweaking! Challenges are half the fun. :)

herbert, do you notice the black when windows startup and when watching video with black bars, the black seemed not so blacked but a bit grey??

it only shows deep black with picture with deep black. i wonder how to make the background when windows startup and black bars on video to be deep black.

i found last night to brightness 13, and contrast 50, was the easiest to the eyes in dark room.

after reading your post just now, i tested it and somehow it properly configured. i could distinguished the true black and true white from the picture. nice found mate! :)

i love this monitor! :D
